Oh you have no idea. The comics ended up providing origin stories for the first line of “Baby X” toys, of which there were many later lines, and as such they are full of the most amazing wtfery.
 
Baby ponies can be cloned by magic mirrors lying around the castle on an auspicious day, or drawn into existence on the right day after passing by a traditional Romany artist camp, or Majesty can just will a companion into existence for you if she thinks you ought to get lucky on your birthday. It all seems very dependent on timing and luck, somehow.
 
With the right care, baby sea ponies can be thawed out of glacial ice. And I think there’s one where some more baby ponies just turn up in a cave or something too, but I’ve not read that one yet.

So you’re saying that G1 ponies have baby clones of theirselves that have one design on their Cutie Mark?

Maybe it’s a printing thing. These comics were pretty good at maintaining their own continuity, always bringing back the same characters and calling back to earlier events.
 
The shortie in the first panel is Baby AJ (>>97564), which is why she’s being a kid and not helping. Baby Lemon Drop in the 1st panel only has one droplet too.

Weird. Applejack mysteriously turns red in some of the panels.
 
She also only has one apple on her flank.
