“Capper, the bipedal anthropomorphic cat, is so far the most controversial character to be revealed. Some find it odd to see a full-blown Funny Animal in the series, as opposed to the usual Civilized Animals we see, complete with accusations of both pandering to the Furry Fandom and trying to ride the coattails of Zootopia. Others find the character to be interesting and unique, plus they point out that anthropomorphic cats have appeared in G1 in the form of the villainess Katrina as well as the IDW comic book. Some even consider it to be rather hypocritical considering nobody batted an eye towards the Diamond Dogs (though that may have been because they were more hunched over and ape-like than upright walking Funny Animals).”

I don’t see why that would need any specific explanation. Of course it would be interesting, finding out what exactly led to this evolutionary split of cats into feral and civilized cats, but just in order to understand it, I don’t see why it’s needed.
I think it’s a pretty commonly-known fact that evolution can do such splits (apes and humans come to mind, an Earth-related example of a lesser-developed species and a higher-developed species that are related with each other and still exist in the same time period) and there is no apparent reason why evolution wouldn’t do that on Equus. In fact, the movie introduced hippogriffs to us, creatures that are like ponies, but with traits of eagles (or maybe griffons?) and Season 8 introduced us to kirin, similar to ponies, but with the traits of dragons.
So there is a possibility that hippogriffs and kirin were there first and that evolution eventually split them into ponies and griffons/eagles and into ponies and dragons, respectively. If that is the case, then the same happened with cats at some point. There was once only one cat species and one day, evolution began to split them up into the four-legged and feral and the two-legged and civilized cats we see in the show and in the movie/comics.
Edit: And, of course, diamond dogs, yes. So the movie did not even introduce us to such evolutionary splits. It could be seen since Season 1 that these happened on Equus.

And to be fair, if it was a matter of it being more a furry and people hating it, then I should point out that not many furries really liked bronies, especially not when the fandom started out despite in some technicality our fandom is a more specific sort of offshoot.
i wonder what you said
Keep dreaming.
This capper lad is a lot more humanoid than the diamond dogs. The diamond dogs is a lot more zoomorphic in form. He actually looks bestial.
My (small) gripe with the designs is that they really don’t mesh too well with the G4 aesthetic. Even Iron Will wasn’t that humanish. I think if you show anyone with small knowledge of the current MLP generation the person would not guess some of the new movie characters come from MLP. I bet even the EqG designs are more recognizable.
They’re humanoid in the vaguest sense. They’re certainly not bipedal. They stand up on their hind legs when they’re attacking or working but otherwise they walk and stand on all fours, much like a gorilla (though they walk on their palms rather than their knuckles).
Dude the writer of course clearly likes Trixie and she played no part in getting the diamond dog to appear since… well they appeared themselves in the comics when Trixie has the ill fortune to get her cart spill her box full of gems. Then they tricked her into being their queen, all the while Trixie also tricking the dogs that she can find gems, though she did find out its not good to become queen of dogs. The comics is funny and is memorable for having one of the few parts where DD’s appear outside of the past 5 seasons.
However let me ramble again on the IDW comics and how its also infuriates me, specially the Sombra reforming arc comic 35 to 37 in where Radiant Hope has collected all of the villains in the show to rile up the main six as they invade the crystal empire of all place, and the one villains the writer clearly forgot are the diamond dogs. Really?! Radiant Hope remember to bring the FlimFlams of all villains and not the diamond dogs? Ugghh…
But hey at least issue no 6 have their race so that is still cool.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!!!!
Ironically, Trixie, who you partially blame for the diamond dogs not being in the show anymore, is responsible for them getting a return in the official comics in Friends Forever #6.^^
How about this? :D
I did said earlier that Cappers design(as of now) is too out of place in terms of G4 since his over all desing just looks too humanoid compared to the other humanoid races that has appeared in the show but that is my say on the matter at hand. I have my problems with him being next to Rover since Rover and the rest of the diamond dogs are far too removed from being too humanoid considering that they are hunched and ape-like in comparison to that of Capper who has a more upright human like posture. My opinion on that cat can change but we will see how the writers will handle him in the movie.
