All shows do. You’ll rarely find a show where you get really fooled by the look of a character. Which doesn’t mean it can’t happen sometimes. And if one show is pulling that off, then it’s this one.

I mean the show has a habit of choosing who’s good and bad based on appearances, and is made more so with the Changelings’ transformation.

Why would it be unlikely? Just because it would be an incredibly unexpected twist? Everything is possible and at this early stage of reveal, it’s all completely open.

While it’s unlikely, it would be great if they did something like that, and play with their own tropes of obviously evil villains are evil.

Saw that comment and, after rejecting it first, I saw how that could work.  
Maybe she is mind-controlling him and he attacks other kingdoms she wants to conquer for her. Then, she comes to those kingdoms’ aids and “defeats him”, followed by helping to build the kingdom up again. And while doing so, in all that chaos the Storm King has left, she somehow takes over the kingdom. Just temporarily, to “help out”, of course.  
But then “something” happens and the former ruler (assuming the Storm King even let them alive and in a state they are still fit to rule) cannot rule over their kingdom anymore, after a terrible, unfortunate “accident”, so Queen Novo is the only one left to take care of this kingdom she “saved”.  
Perfect strategy to conquer another kingdom without getting accused. Maybe she has set her eyes on Equestria now.  
That is another possibility and explanation for why she appears slightly evil.

Can’t wait to watch the movie here in my country Brazil! Pretty sure Queen Novo will be voiced by Marisa Leal, who voiced Uzo in Orange Is The New Black and Steven Universe. I pretend to watch it twice: One subtitled and one dubbed.

Queen Novo….. Are you evil?
 
She has a friendly smile, yet there is something sly in it. And she has a sinister glance in her eyes.  
Do we have, perhaps, made a pact with the Storm King, queen? Are you the secret villain our heroes will only uncover over time? I will keep my eyes on you.
 
 
But even if she isn’t a villain, there’s something about her that isn’t good. I bet she’s a total bitch, then, refusing to help.
 
“Why?” (Cue Twilight, “What?”) “Why should we help you? We fought the Storm King long ago and live in peace ever since we defeated him. Why should we help YOUR kingdom, a kingdom we don’t know and don’t care for, and risk to harm our own kingdom with it? Tell me, princess, why?”
 
I’m hyped for her even more than for the others! :D

This is our replacement for princess Celestia and that other princess for Luna.  
Have a dreaded feeling those two aren’t going to be in the movie

Like instead of having Celestia and Luna there are a bunch of random leaders and Twilight was elected by them to be the main ruler, somthey made her an alicorn and these two seapony royals are the “re-imaginings” of Luna and Celestia a d are friends and mentors of Twilight.  
Also don’t you think it’s suspicious that she has the same color scheme as Celestia?
 
I ay be totally wrong and going into the realm of imagination but it wouldn’t be the first movie adaptation of a popular franchise that has screwed up the lore.

Because every queen or king that’s been in MLP so far (depite only being one of each) has been evil, also Lauren faust said that’s the reason she had Celestia as a princess because she associated the word queen with being a baddie.

Did we ever get confirmation that the pony design revealed then is the character she’s actually voicing and not her ponysona? Because I don’t recall that.

Maybe she is a hybrid who leads both races would explain why she gets to be a queen instead of a princess.
