Maybe it’s because “Tsundere Culture” is so big right now, but there seems to be more images of Spike being upset by hugs. I can’t see Spike trying to make an excuse to get out of a hug or a cuddle. He loves hugs in the show and has never turned away from one. Twilight is the most important pony in his life and—even though she isn’t his mother or sister—she is the one he relies on the most, and therefore has hugged the most.

There’s a syntax guide if you click the […] on the comment panel. All you need is >>, then the image number (the chunk of numbers before the ?scope= or #comments stuff in the url; this image being 1314603 if you look at the address) then t for a little thumbnail or p for a reasonably large sized preview.

Like, maybe I might see them as having a mom/son bond but way more likely and fitting to me would be if she saw herself as his big sister. Hugs and doting still fit, and the occasional bits of teasing and rough treatment makes way more sense with siblings.

I know it’s not perfect… She used to do things you mention. But I honestly tly don’t remember anything like that happening in last two seasons. Now she always shields him with her wings or grabs him in her magic. So maybe it’s hidden character development for Twilight? But yeah, this is not simple relationship.

Apologies to the artist for spamming your lovely pic. I agree, please make more!

I also apologize for the wall of text… And I respect your opinion of course, somehow this issue is just so important to me, eh. So, yeah let’s be friends ;-)

Sorry to be a contrary voice, but for every “maternal” moment or positive moment there’s a moment of Twilight teleporting herself to safety and leaving Spike to splat against the side of the library/rolling her eyes at him dismissively/or letting him somehow get hurt in her presence. Twilight and Spike share a very unique bond, but it’s hardly a perfect one. Using a term like maternal (or even sisterly) is too “easy” a way to define their relationship. Just my two cents…

That being said, we’d love to see more Spike from you… especially if it’s touching/happy moments with Twilight like this.

If anyone was responsible for raising Spike, it would make more sense for either Celestia or Twilight’s parents to be the ones to pick up the slack.

It may make sense but it’s just not the case, unless the show writers are hiding it very very well. I don’t really care about “world of god” or “but that doesn’t make sense” arguments: I care only about what I see it he actual show. And this is how I see those two - as best friends/siblings/mother-child. I think this ambiguity makes their relationships very interesting.

Next is their interactions on the show. When I see the two of them onscreen (especially during the first 2 seasons), their interactions just seem to fit the mold of best friends/siblings rather than any sort of mother/child relationship.

Here’s were I disagree. While it was pretty much friends/siblings relationship is seasons 1-2 as you say, it changed a lot especially since S4. At least this is how I read it.

Twilight just doesn’t come off as maternal to me in her interactions with Spike. She doesn’t seem to imply anything maternal in any dialogue between the two and she doesn’t seem to show him any additional affection on top of what she would show to any of her other close friends.

Sorry but I just can’t disagree more…. Watch carefully everytime those two interact (and Twilight is not too distracted to notice him lol). You’ll see how it actually changed. It’s often Blink-and-You’ll-Miss-It but it’s there for those who care to look.

Also, this. How is that entire scene not maternal? :D

Hey! Hey.

Hey, it’s not my headcanon that Spike doesn’t like hugs.

How dare you slightly deviate from my personal interpretation of the show.

This is pretty adorable tho.

The theory just seems extremely weird to me. First, Spike was hatched when Twilight was still young. As made clear in ‘Amending Fences’, Twilight was a pretty inattentive kid with her head lost in her books who seemed to be ignorant of most of the social relationships connected to her. Given this, I imagine Twilight wouldn’t be a particularly good mother at that period in her life. If anyone was responsible for raising Spike, it would make more sense for either Celestia or Twilight’s parents to be the ones to pick up the slack. Next is their interactions on the show. When I see the two of them onscreen (especially during the first 2 seasons), their interactions just seem to fit the mold of best friends/siblings rather than any sort of mother/child relationship. Twilight just doesn’t come off as maternal to me in her interactions with Spike. She doesn’t seem to imply anything maternal in any dialogue between the two and she doesn’t seem to show him any additional affection on top of what she would show to any of her other close friends. The ‘you’re not mommy’ moment (from S1 I believe) indicates that Spike likely doesn’t see Twilight as his mother either. In their interactions, she comes across as the responsible older sister and him the witty, wisecracking younger brother. The mother/son headcanon is not an outlandish one to have, I just don’t see it. This is just my opinion of course and I fully respect those who don’t share it. I apologize in advance for the wall of text.
