Yep, gradient. I usually use pixels. Vectors… I’m not very good xD

One tip for the shadows. Put a point when you think is the light. In base at this point, only work to create the shadows. The most common is put, in the left, and in upper corner.

You can add to a simple gradient background, if you want. I recommended red, orange dark, orange light and yellow.

For example, this background.

Another possibility is made a Navy blue, Dark blue, light blue, and white gradient. The effect is very good in ocs like ore pie. He use a “hot colors” like red, black, and gray. With that background, you made a less aggressive image. It’s difficult to explain xD, only test the possibility.

@sadlolz
In that’s case, yes. And image with only simple colors, normally are less good looking than a image with shadows and lights.
Do the lines more defined.
For no use a base, then, it’s a good draw.

What’s programm you use? For do a better tips for that program

Ummm, to improve, the better way it’s the hair.
Attend to not use a base, and do first a traditional sketch.
After this, only scan with a printer, upload to your drawn program and Do the lineart with, if you have a pad, this. If you have a mouse, use the tool “curve”.

When you have the lineart, block the lineart, create different layers, and put in every one, different parts. For example, one layer for the hair, one layer for the body, one for details… etc etc.
When you have all the layers with sample colors, use The tool, spray, subtool soft, to made a effect of shadow, in determinate parts.
Next to, made the lights. All of this, the shadow, and the light, in different layers.

Put more curves, and less polygonal lines.

Another tip, if you upload one only oc, like that, don’t forget to add the “oc only” tag.
