It works the same way Spikebelle works, because their characters mesh. You can ship ponies for reasons other than standing next to each other, eg, Scratchtavia had nothing going for it except for a shared interest in music and a potential clash of party girl and snob personality.

Hell, pointing out Jan for why it happened is showing you have no idea how people will come up with a ship and follow it with all sorts of thing.

Please, give examples. Because otherwise it sounds like you’re seriously trying to compare ‘dismissed them as not being suitable boyfriend material, in less than a second, during a song montage, and have never since appeared on screen together again’ to stuff like Lyrabon?
 
Until Jan picked him up and made him a character, he barely even existed as a character. He had no defining traits besides what he looked like and that he was seen playing a video game. He’s never even appeared outside of his debut, anywhere, not even in the CCG, until after Jan’s stuff made him a character.
 
Even since then, it wasn’t until the 100th episode that they brought him back, where all he did was sit next to Ruby Pinch and use a ‘video game’ saltlick in an alleyway (which is creepy when you think about it) and be part of the foal crowd-shot at the end of Crusaders of the Lost Mark, then disappeared again until this episode, at the dance recital. Ssitting next to Ruby Pinch, again.
 
Besides those cumulative 20 seconds or so of screentime he hasn’t appeared at all. Anywhere. Not even in the CCG. Even equally obscure characters like Apple Strudel and Hugh goddamn Jelly at least got an enterplay card. I cannot for the life of me think of a single character who is less well-defined by stuff that’s happened outside of fan material.
 
(Wow I put way more time into pointing out why this ship (or I guess just Button) is stupid than it deserved. TL;DR: Button Mash is an OC, because he did not exist as anything but a character model before Jan. Or since then, for that matter.)

I didn’t argue that romance will never happen. Shining/Cadance and Donkeys still technically count as romance. Same with Trenderhoof falling for AJ or Spike for Rarity.
 
It just not going to be affected by fanbase. Is pointless for Diselstia or Fluttermac to hope that their ship will become canon, because if anything the original show created MarbleMac or Discoshy will just get more attention if the direction decide that they want to focus on romance or on the offspring of the main characters(in a new series or generation)

For me these “hints” and “nods” are even worse than admitting the ship straight forward, it doesn’t give enough proof to either side but just fueling the arguing. It’s better to avoid such hinting all together.

None of the ships will become canon due to fanbase shipping it or being popular. Director and many others show staffers said that if romance happen, it will be a natural part of the character development and will just happen as the integral part of the story. Not because someone said “DASH AND APPLEJACK SHOULD HOOK UP AM I RIGHT!????”
 
When i ship TenderBloom or DiscoShy is because they are already friends in the story. My preferences in no way boost or halt the progression of the development between characters becasue the scripts are made way much in advance. And for example, Discord gala episode with Fluttershy was written when Twilight almost stoned him in S4 premiere while there might be already a MarbleMac episode in the future even though it was written before anyone could react for it’s first appearance in S5. Writers just don’t care about fanbase shipping or anti-shipping. They do what they think is vital to the story and character emotional development.

I know right? People are treating them as they canon and that’s really stupid, like Rainbow are belongs to Soarin and can’t be shipped with anyone else.  
On a side note all shipping should stay in fanon, I just can’t stomach people that getting out of their skin trying to push their shipping on show staff hoping they are make it come true, I just can’t understand why people want their ships to become canon so fucking badly? Why shipping in fanon is not enough for them?
