actually, the bulb is irrelevant, scootaloo was thinking about which end the thermometer was put in applebloom, not which end of the thermometer was put in.

the idea of the buld at the end is for when they are put in hugely hot things.
 
It allows them space to fill up before they burst.

Come to think of it, medical thermometers don’t tend to have bulbs at all, but it’s a common enough cartoon trope to depict them having one (I guess because it makes it easier to identify as a thermometer?)

Um, old-school mercury thermometers SHOULD have the bulb sticking out. The other end has the metal contact on it, which goes under the tongue.
