Oh yeah, I kinda see that.
Although that's more likely to be coincidence than not, considering our brains are hard-wired to recognize human faces and we often think we see them in places where they don't exist at all.

Correct. We're hard-wired to recognize faces. There's even a term for this phenomenon of pattern recognition. Pareidolia. And we even have a tag for it here.

By contrast, I love it when there are tags based completely on headcanon, like say incest between two ponies who have never been stated to be family members at all in the series. Justified if the artist says they're siblings or mother-and-daughter or whatever, but if the artist doesn't then it's the tagger applying his or her headcanon bias.

To the guy that removed the aurora tag, this is most certainly an aurora. Aurora borealis is simply the term for auroras in the northern hemisphere, AKA the northern lights (aurora australis is the southern equivalent). I'll keep both tags though since aurora borealis is the more used tag, although it isn't necessarily scientifically correct.

holy sh*t I sound like a nerd

I love it when people remove a tag because they don't understand its definition and don't realize it's correct.

Man, that sounds awesome. I've seen both phenomena in the cockpit, but never at the same time.

Plainoasis: I love the brushstrokes: is this a painting or digital? Either way nicely done!

@kleptomage What happens is that the Earth got hit by a Large Solar Flare, and the magnetically charged particles hit our magnetosphere. This is what usually occurs with Auroras, but this time the particle density was such that they started hitting in large enough quantities that the resulting aurora was visible so far south. Unfortunately, I missed it myself because of my city's light pollution.

A really cool sight is St. Elmo's Fire on a plane's wing, with the aurora in the background. Saw that on a flight to Siberia over the Aleutian Islands. God I wish I had a camera.

I would like to see the Aurora Borealis one day. It must be especially beautiful over a snowy landscape.

There was an incredibly rare atmospheric event, something like once in so many hundreds of thousands of years, about 13 or 14 years ago which extended it down further south. And it was visible for a short time in some of the northwestern states.

@kleptomage

I think I just saw it for the first time recently, over northern Michigan — which is why I presume this got upped for featured just now, since we had a stronger than usual display.

I suppose it's probably much easier to see farther north even farther away from city lights. I mostly saw a slightly green band of color near the north horizon (and above at least one star, so I know it wasn't ground light).
