Perhaps they were making a broad statement about pop stars in general, and they just used a Lady Gaga allegory as an example.
Well truth be told, I don’t see it as a means of criticism, more like a means of a selection of references. Not everything has to be a “statement”, after all…
I think it was daring in this case, because Lady Gaga is generally considered more sincere than most pop stars, and to most this puts her above criticism. This episode showed that even the most beloved need a reality check once in a while. That’s why it’s daring.
Yes, that’s what I was referring to by implying there was some subtlety to it, going with the character named in a verse rather than the main chorus.
Bashing celebrities hasn’t been daring for a long time now. It’s completely mainstream, almost expected. It would take more courage to oppose bashing than to cater to it.

I’m pretty sure the comparison was so painfully blatant that even a good chunk of the target demographic got the reference.
It’s meant to look disingenuous given who was actually behind it.
Also, considering her nickname was “Rara” and she was a pop star, and her alter ego goes by a formal “first name”, I thought it was a reference to Lady Gaga that didn’t go totally overboard.
Also, I thought “HOOFSIES!” was actually pretty funny with how disingenuous it was, and how they kept with it without going too far with the joke.
