Back (probably), before you were born S0NY made the PlayStation 3. At the time of its launch at E3, and the infamous 599.99$ joke. The also presented one of its launch games called Genji 2. Where the player could re-live “real battles, that actually happend in Japanese history”. Cue the Giant Enemy Crab! (In which you had to hit its “weak spot” for massive damage.)
No, I think you’re right. One guy commissions a bunch of dA artists with this theme, they get posted here, it morphs into a bit of an inside joke/meme.
I think one person bought a crap-load of commissions for this very specific situation, and the sheer absurdity (and how specific it was) got people’s attention.
It helps that Rarity, on paper, sounds exactly like a character you’d find in previous My Little Pony generations; Rarity is anything but that, she can be a total badass when she needs to!
I think it started out with someone commissioning a bunch of artist and then it just kind of snowballed into its own thing.
