Why are people suggesting that the Rich family is New Money?
More accurately it is a Merchants vs Nobility conflict, it is just Old money vs New money is the conflict more people are familiar with.

Why are people suggesting that the Rich family is New Money? Seeing as how the business started with Flithy’s father: Stinkin’ Rich and along with the Apples founded Ponyville, they clearly have to be considered old money at least because DT is a 3rd generation rich kid and their net worth has maintained or gained. This also raises the question of how the Apples don’t have similar net worth even with their long term deal.

As far as living in Ponyville, Filthy ain’t moving. My Headcanon is that she grew up living in Manehattan, in one of the poorer sections before her family got wealth fast, moving to the more upscale towns which filled the whole families ego’ with the nouveau riche mentality. But it didn’t last as they continued to buy things they couldn’t afford, but Spoiled Rich groomed herself to become a socialite and began marrying or bedding stallions before the money floor gave under them. I wouldn’t be surprised if Filthy Rich is Spoiled’s 4th or 5th husband.

Headcanon: Spoiled Rich actually grew up poor and was a “blank flank” for the longest time; she didn’t get her cutie mark until she married into Filthy Rich’s fortune. She despises poor ponies, especially “blank flanks”, whom she considers lazy and shiftless. However, the real reason (though she won’t admit it) is that they remind her of herself in her younger days.

Headcanon 1: Spoiled Rich is original from Canterlot (they’re kind of jerks) but she just moved to ponyville to marry Filthy Rich for sugardaddy purposes.

Headcanon 2: Silverspoon is Mayor Mare’s kid. Her hair is just as naturally pink.

Better to be a big fish in a small pond than to actually have competition, I suppose.

FUN FACT: I always forget Spoiled Rich’s name, so I just call her Bitch Tits.

It could also be classism against New Money or racism against Earth Ponies. The best schools seem to be Unicorn-only. Besides, who’s to say that DT & SS don’t have private tutors? There actually are very wealthy families who send their kids to state-run schools for social interaction but hire tutors to give them that extra edge.

I always did find it weird that Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon went to the same public school as all the “poor” ponies go to.

Then again if they lived in a neighborhood of all rich ponies, they’d have to work harder to stay ahead or eventually they’d be seen as the poor family where they live.

Also Filthy Rich has legit business reasons to remain in Ponyville.

New money screams while old money whispers. The rich family is new money. They stay in ponyville because it’s their base of operations. As rich as they are that cash doesn’t come from nowhere.

It’s a classic.
Be a big fish amongst the average ones, or be an average one amongst the big ones?

Seems like perfect logic when you consider:
A) Her husband’s (the one actually raking in the money in the family) main business is his stores.
B) The Stores started and were founded in Ponyville (By Riches grandfather so sentimental value)
C) Filthy Rich has that exclusive deal with the Apples for a rare product (Zap apple jam) so I doubt he just give that up.
