I wish this is what happened. I’d love to see Applejack’s, Rarity’s, and Rainbow Dash’s- not to mention Twilight’s- reactions over it.

Personally I feel like twilight’s acension to an alicorn would’ve been perfect in the season 5 finale where it would’ve felt a lot more natural plus it would’ve made starlight being just as powerful as her a lot less of an ass pull.

Well, I think one main difference is that the CMC “ascension” came after an already well done episode. After the incredibly mature way the CMC treated DT in that episode I felt like they had actually earned their marks. They had themselves already grown as characters even before the episode acknowledged by giving them their marks.
 
MMC on the other hand was completely anticlimatic. Compared to all the things Twilight had done before, the plot of that episode was about as unepic as you can possibly get, and while I would never say that Twilight didn’t earn her title, she certainly didn’t do so in that episode.
 
Thus in the end the result felt contrived, and not natural as with the CMC.

honestly I prefer it this way, because then they would have had to cram the rainbow power plotline stuff into the middle of all of that.

Between “The Crystal Empire” and “Magic Duel”, I could tell something was up; by the time “Games Ponies Play” aired shortly after Twilight’s ascension was confirmed, I could see how they were trying to show her maturing and overcoming old mistakes during the course of the season. More build-up and development would’ve been nice, but there was at least some effort made despite the shortened season and rushed production schedule.
 
I doubt it would’ve satisfied most of the critics, though, who object to the very idea of Twilight being an alicorn princess.

Perhaps, that was my only real beef with the Season 3 finale & Twilight’s ascension. It just kinda came out of nowhere, with only one real hint/foreshadowing in the Season 3 premiere. More build-up, and development would’ve made it better.
 
I think this is why most fans were more satisfied with the CMC’s “ascension.” It seemed to have more build-up over the years/seasons.

If they had Season 4 confirmed/renewed sooner, they probably could’ve had more episodes building up to Twilight’s ascension.

I don’t think that Larson wanted Twilycorn to happen, at least not the way it was done in MMC.
 
 
I mean, all the other episodes he has written have decent buildup and an engaging story. I’m actually pretty sure that that episode became the way it is through outside pressure on the writers, not because they wanted it like that.

Both episodes are great, and I’m not really comparing them, but the conflict that was solved in Lost Mark wasn’t the fault of the ponies who caused it in the first place, and while there is definately marketing that will follow this, I think more people actually wanted the Crusaders to get their marks, while alicorn Twilight was all Hasbro. I like her, BTW, even though she offsets the symmetry of two of each nation.

There’s a subtle thing one reviewer noticed, during Tiara’s happier reprise of “The Pony I want to Be,” there’s a close-up of her cutie-mark glowing, almost implying she re-earned her cutie-mark.
