Post-modernist philosophy is a school of thought surrounding the rejection of narratives about narratives of history (meta-narratives). Marxism is a school of thought based on two theories: Marxian Economics (Marx’s Labor Theory of Value) and Dialectical Materialism/Historical Materialism. Neo-Marxism is a school of thought surrounding revisions of Marxist theory–stuff like the Radical Feminism of Shulamith Firestone. Historical Materialism/Dialectical Materialism is a meta-narrative and hence Marxism and neo-Marxism are at complete odds with post-modern thought. Post-modern neo-Marxism is an oxymoron.
If we’re discussing the difference between modern and post-modern art then the generalized way I’ve had that explained to be is that Modern Art is something along the lines of permanence and post-modern recognizes the impermanence of a thing. Or to put it another way: everything great by man will last because there is nothing to bring it down vs. fucking nukes nothing is immortal.
It’s not my intent to be antagonistic, but I feel compelled to clarify, as postmodernism is better understood as general term encompassing numerous schools of thought. While these schools are in this general sense united by a deconstructionist aim, it is important not to conflate the concepts of postmodern art with postmodern philosophy, the latter of which was correctly outlined by Aaron below.
More so, what you’re specifically referencing can actually be understood as instances of modern art; Andy Warhol, pop art, minimalism, and the subjective understanding of art are concepts iconic to modernism. While these concepts and techniques have also survived into postmodern practice, postmodern art is more acutely demonstrated by concept driven pieces such as mixed media, temporary installations, and other works of conceptualism (again, not to be confused with the philosophical school of conceptualism).
Would you touch a poop for $20?
Postmodernism is a school of thought, typified by artists such as andy warhol and later, those “artists” who just fling paint at a canvas.
It takes an egalitarian look at creative works “if art is subjective, a urinal can be art.”
This line of reasoning can be applied to any aspect of life, not that it should.
It’s a bullshit term that’s come up to replace stuff like “Cultural Bolshevism/Marxism” which roughly translates out to, “Anything I don’t like that is wrong with the world per my world view”. The major proponent, in so far as I’ve learned is Jordan Peterson who basically ignores everything to toss out a new word sandwich.
Your diagnoses of the term is right. And we could go deeper: Marxism is part of the period of western philosophy that’s part of the Modern school of thought, the later portion of that. Where the entire idea is that natural and human processes can be rationally understood through scientific thought, David “Feels before Reals” Hume aside. Post Modernists contend the universal worldview is inapplicable and pretty much propose non-universal theories, or advocate the abolition of these universalist ideas (man, woman); but as a whole post-modern is ambiguous as fuck.
So it’s something rolled out but its meaning is little more than self cannibalization.
So what is it? New, new Marxism?
