I bet if you went out into a city where an mlp con was being held and asked random people on the streets about the show, they would be largely ignorant of it. It’s not like a prerequisite for holding conventions be that it’s in some sort of metropolis built by fans of said thing.

I wouldn’t call the 5 or 6 ponies at the traveling museum a massive following.
Technically, we don’t know what constitutes “getting them right”, but the placement of Twilight’s bells are different than the ones on the poster. Such a different would be HUGE for an OCD pony like Twi.

They probably follow the traveling museum like Deadheads packing up and following the tour.
(Remember, Luna confirmed that Twilight DID get the bells right, which is considered an impressive bit of nerdery, even by Luna’s standards.)
