In Ponyville Confidential (season 2), Gabby Gums reports that Fluttershy has tail extensions. It’s possible that Gabby Gums was mistaken, but Fluttershy was so upset, it seemed like her secret had been found out.
Around animals and the CMC she has a warm and motherly nature.
She is the quickest to crying and for example is in tears after the town finds out she wears hair extensions.
Mud mask stuff is referring to “Look Before You Sleep”.
And yeah. AJ was just getting a massage when they were all at the spa, compared to Rarity’s whole thing and Twilight apparently putting more color in her mane and getting her hooves done.
Eh. It didn’t seem out of place or out of character, so it doesn’t quite matter.
I took the whole “Don’t like having my hooves touched” as just an excuse to get out of it, reputation intact. Although, a fashion show for dresses is alright.
You are correct though. I knew someone who wasn’t quite sure how to correctly put more than basic make-up on until she was 27.
I just RD didn’t like having her hooves touched and didn’t AJ get a message or something during that scene? Who knows maybe she warmed up to the idea. :P
Either way, we’re both right in the idea that AJ and RD have no problem with it as long as it doesn’t become reach uncomfortable amounts.
Spas aren’t cool, maybe? Or does it have to do with her disliking hoof touches.
Applejack isn’t into stuff that isn’t practical. There are different levels of feminine. Not every girl wants to dress like a Disney princesss.

Well, Dash did outright reject the spa treatment.
Hell, after the article was published, she bought every copy in Cloudsdale to keep ponies from drawing the wrong conclusion.
And Applejack did initially turn down Rarity’s offer. As well as grumbling about the mud masks and having to wear a “glittery, frou-frou lacy outfit”.
Your overall point does still stand though.

Then again tomboys don’t have to be stone butch. Plenty of boyish girls like feminine things.
Neutral femininity. As in a pony who doesn’t act to or against “girlishness” behavior.
Though with all that mind AJ and Rainbow would probably be androg. Yes, they are athletic and tough (then again so are the other 4), but they don’t outright reject all the dresses and spa treatments.
Athletic? Yes. Tomboy? Probably. But she hasn’t been shown to be boyish, at least not much more boyish than Twilight.
But I’d say that Twilight is more girly than Pinkie, but still less than Fluttershy and Rarity.
RD’s kind of a tomboy type.
