I always thought that the product in this comic was zap apple cider instead of jam (‘cause Rainbow loves cider).
 
I have this headcanon that RD’s favorite Apple Family product is zap apple cider.

Rainbow was lucky to have survived in one piece. Most foals who came in contact with zap apple jam before birth either didn’t survive or were born with physical or mental handicap.

The joke is Dash’s mother consumed Zap Apple jam while pregnant which caused Dash’s mane and tail to be rainbow colored.
 
@Crowley: Only question I have for that is, wouldn’t her entire body be rainbow colored as well?
