I always forget about Wallflower… and about the first IDW comic too.

Yeah, CHS is not great, especially before the Rainbooms friendshipped it up. I guess I separate active bullies like Sunset was from reactively jerkish bystanders pointing and laughing like in the first movie and finale, and my point was that Sunset was a known bully compared to the anonymous posters of Anon-A-Miss… or outnumbering Sunset’s revenge an entire school to one.

As the bully, unrepentant, relentless and one domino away from everything getting found out, she might have been minding collateral damage to keep consequences under control. Something the occasional and/or nameless jerks wouldn’t need to do.

…before she outed herself with stealing the crown and kidnapping Spike anyway.

yeah she probably just doesn’t like collateral damage

(Though “only what’s needed and nothing more” could also fit her ‘school-owning mastermind’ personality.)

Personally, I don’t think Canterlot has a fully great environment.

Wallflower Blush used a magical stone just because no one noticed and was willing to ruin somebody else’s life because of that.
Again, the final specials had the whole school mocking the humane 7 with their awkward thanksgiving dresses and someone actually started to record it.
While IDW has a very shaky canon, it’s also home of the infamous EG special where a simple Anon-A-Miss incident brought out the worst of people first by laughing at the Mane 6 and then publishing everybody’s secrets and turning everything into a hellhole using Sunset as a scapegoat.
Plus rather than help Twilight with the horrible video, they just started laughing at her, only Rarity has the decency of giving her a disguise.
Going back into IDW, there was another evil bully before Sunset who also caused problems.
And while not inherently jerkish as much as jaded and demoralized, the comments Flash and Pinkie made to Celestia regarding the Friendship Games were nasty, and along everybody else looking as uninterested brings the fact the school spirit wasn’t really at its best.

I’m not saying the environment was far more toxic than Crystal Prep, but honestly the people at CHS likely weren’t completely innocent either and I do believe Sunset merely became the top dog rather than becoming the single source of problems there.

Yeah that’s a good point, thanks for bringing it up. And well, Sunset is supposed to be the Element of Empathy if I recall right? Though maybe not when the first movie was planned.

Another explanation could be caution; as a pony she could magic anyone who fought back into a wall even without Celestia’s protection, but as a human teenager, she’s basically defenseless and all her discount mob tactics won’t save her if she angers the wrong people. Better to only risk as much heat as necessary.

She also had no competition as a bully (who’s actually known as such rather than anonymously being a jerk online) in CHS IIRC, for all we know she’d have been eaten alive in Crystal Prep. The only fish in a bowl of seaweeds. Every other villain was pretty much the opposite of “defenseless.”

Not quite “being noticed” as the main objective (though it doesn’t hurt) so much as much as proving she’s made to be a princess by demonstrating she’s cunning or have the achievements…even though she got them by cheating and mistreating others.

Her methods are quite mafia-like in a school setting: Make everybody fears you even though no one has proof against you or the people are too afraid to do so, the higher authorities are essentially bought out by you rather than brute forcing everything, find dirt in somebody else to turn people against them, essentially playing in a “legal-yet-illegal” manner, as in having a cover for her nasty behavior because she can’t just punch through every single problem. She even has a dark alley scene in a dark passage.

Something interesting is that the Mane 6 infer Sunset is the one who sent messages to spread the Mane 6….but at no point gets a confirmation from Sunset herself nor Snips and Snails, just an inferring fron the protagonists. Which combined with the surprising amount of bullies around makes me think she probably created a boogeyman on herself yet she merely played people around easily because many people were already rotten.

Of course this is mostly to fill gaps in the fun-yet-flawed movie but one can dream.

I think it’s stock renders - I mean, remember those stock vectors that Hasbro would always use for G4 (that were not very good)

Maybe that’s why she’s to be redeemed. She’s like Gilda but with more ambition with yet a simple goal. To be noticed.

overall I like the CG artystle of G5 but for some reason the introductory screenshots you see in all of the promotional art are uniquely hideous and uncanny valley central.

Has anyone note Sunset Shimmer is the only antagonist who actually seems to care about avoiding collateral damage?

She didn’t want to fight Twilight assuming she was just a newcomer that merely doesn’t know what’s going on.

She ordered thrashing the party to Snips and Snails but complains to them because they overdid and only wanted just enough to blame Twilight but not to cancel the party altogether.

She holds Spike as a hostage to lure Twilight but quickly releases him.

When she noted breaking the portal wouldn’t work she yields and only lunges one her frustrations has become too much for her.

Seriously most other villains often destroy stuff without even considering the ramifications, even when said ramifications could undo them. That doesn’t make her nice nor good but it’s interesting a villain or antagonist that tries to reduce damage to third-parties if possible.

It’s still nothing compared to the nonstop Celestia bashing, celebrating the cancellation of G5, and just about everything else.

I probably shouldn’t latch on like this, still around even though I said I’m done. Accusing the entire fandom or trying to believe Hasbro’s use of AI or mismanagement is to blame. I think I’m really just trying to cope, cope with the fact that MLP was never good.

But I still have it in my head, constantly. It’s just so hard for me to let go. I guess I can’t just abandon it. It’s hard to love MLP but it’s somehow harder to hate it…

I don’t see how you missed all that. But it’s here.

So, you know how in the popular fanfic Five-Score Divided by Four Shining Armor developed a crush on Rarity? I wonder if anyone ever wrote a followup story where Cadance eventually found out about her husband’s little affair while she was still stuck in human flesh. I’ll bet she wasn’t too pleased to hear that Shining cheated on her for one of his sister’s friends.

Indeed - as a known nice guy who particularly likes Twilight, his behaviour is an indicator of the Sirens’ influence which doesn’t touch the main cast. A minor role, perhaps, but more necessary to the plot than a random love interest was to the previous film’s IMO.

I dare to say almost everybody laughed at Twilight when Sunset’s video was submitted. During the final specials while the main characters were suffering from awkward costumes someone even starting recording rather than help.
The humane 5 were so easily sabotaged by fake messages.
The infamous IDW showcased almost everybody on board of laughing at others until they became the joke similar to Ponyville Confidential.

If you think about it, sometimes I wonder if Sunset was merely the perfect guilty party to vent against during Rainbow Rocks despite not being the only nasty one. Kind of a “guilty easy scapegoat”.

But on the flipside…Flash never partake in any of those moments. Really, Flash is one of the few I really believe needed magical brute force to brainwash rather than typical “more than mind control” thingy.
